Compartment syndrome after pressurized infusion.

چکیده
Compartment syndrome is caused by any condition which increases interstitial pressure within a muscle compartment to the extent that blood flow is compromised. It is seen classically after trauma to an extremity with crush injury, vascular damage or subsequent tight bandaging. Its sequelae may include irreversible neural and muscular damage secondary to the ischaemic insult. Previously described iatrogenic causes of particular interest to anaesthetists include limb compression in the insensible patient [1], arterial cannula extravasation [2], hyperosmolar Bier block [3] and intra-arterial barbiturates [4]; these reports appear in orthopaedic surgery and neurology literature. Pressurized infusions through infiltrated i.v. catheters represent a potential source of compartment syndrome with resulting dysfunction [2, 5, 6].

Impending compartment syndrome of the forearm and hand after a pressurized infusion in a patient under general anesthesia -A case report-
A 74-year-old woman underwent posterior lumbar decompressive fusion at L4-5 for treating spondylolisthesis, with the patient under general anesthesia and she was in the prone position. Following attempts to transfuse blood using a pressurized bag, the intravenous infusion site of the left hand along with the noninvasive blood pressure cuff was changed. Swelling and several bullae on the left fo...
متن کاملCompartment syndrome due to extravasation of peripheral parenteral nutrition: extravasation injury of parenteral nutrition
Compartment syndrome is a rare but devastating condition that can result in permanent neuromuscular or soft tissue injuries. Extravasation injuries, among the iatrogenic causes of compartment syndrome, occur under a wide variety of circumstances in the inpatient setting. Total parenteral nutrition via a peripheral route is an effective alternative for the management of critically ill children w...
متن کاملAbdominal Compartment Syndrome after Cesarean Section: A Case Report
Background: Abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) after cesarean section (CS) is a rare event which is associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. This complication may arise as a result of musculoskeletal trauma and fluid accumulation. The present report aimed to introduce a case of ACS after the cesarean section. Case report: We present...
متن کاملRegional Anesthesia Did Not Delay Diagnosis of Compartment Syndrome: A Case Report of Anterior Compartment Syndrome in the Thigh Not Masked by an Adductor Canal Catheter
BACKGROUND Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) of the thigh after elective primary total knee arthroplasty is rare. If not recognized and treated promptly, devastating consequences may result. Certain regional anesthesia techniques are thought to mask the symptoms of acute compartment syndrome, but there are no cases reported of adductor canal catheters masking the symptoms of thigh compartment sy...
متن کاملMannitol extravasation during partial nephrectomy leading to forearm compartment syndrome.
We present the first known complication of forearm compartment syndrome after mannitol infusion during partial nephrectomy. We stress the importance of excellent intravenous catheter access and constant visual monitoring of the intravenous catheter site during and after mannitol infusion as ways to prevent this complication. Prompt recognition of compartment syndrome with appropriate interventi...
